Top Ten Action Movies: 2000-2009

Updated on July 2, 2010

Throughout movie history there are blockbuster's and there are movies that never should have existed. Action movies are some of my favorites.

I was going through the list of action movies from 2000 up until 2009 on Blockbuster's website and discovered that I wouldn't be able to make a top ten list for each of the years.

So I decided that I would just do a top ten for the decade. The last ten years were good for action movies but there just wasn't enough it the genre to do each year.

My favorite types of movies in order are comedies, action, and drama's, then horror.

Some of my favorite books are by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. If you enjoy stories as much as I do then you'll most definitely enjoy this series of top ten lists.

My comedy top ten lists cover the following years:

2000

2001

2002

2003

2004

2005

2006

2007

2008

2009

Without any more delay here is the top ten action movies from 2000-2009

2000

Gone in 60 Seconds 2000

Gone in 60 Seconds from 2000 is a remake of a 60’s movie of the same name. Starring Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie this movie is an adrenaline rush from start to finish. The whole gist of the movie is about an ex car thief—cage who gets sucked into a massive car heist to save his brother from the clutches of the bad guy.

Along the way Cage gets back together with his girlfriend Jolie. He also reunites some of his old car boosting buddies from his heyday. There is also a group of new thieves ready to prove themselves to Cage’s character.

Cage is also confronted with a car he crashed which is a Shelby named Elenore. At the end of this movie Cage gets to his destination with the 50th car Elenore but he is too late.

2001

A Knights Tale 2001

The glory days of medieval England and Europe is what this movie is about…sort of.  A young squire named William is starving and needs his knight to win the joust.  However, the knight died in the last run of the joust of which there is one more round to go.  William decides against better wisdom to ride in the knight’s place.  All William has to do is stay on the horse, which he does.

This success leads William to take a life threatening path by making himself into a knight.  His closest friends come along for the ride and he is soon riding in jousting events across England and into Europe.  Some people figure out his secret and threaten to bring light to who he really is but instead opt to support William.

The antagonist in this movie becomes extremely jealous of William and in short order finds him out and gets him arrested.  William’s girlfriend and his friends stand up for William as he heads to the stocks.

2002

XXX 2002

This movie will have you cheering for the unlikely hero in Vin Diesel.

A man who is not at all concerned about the law or the government but when faced with jail or serving his country he chooses to serve his country by helping the CIA uncover a terrorist group by the name of “Anarchy 99”.

This movie is an exciting heart pounding show with a lot of great stunts. The coolest part for me was the music, the car, and the plot.

The main female lead in this movie was also a great benefit of the movie.

2003

The Rundown 2003

The Rundown stars Dwayne Johnson and Sean William Scott and has the two pitted against each other.  The Rock is hired by Scott’s father to go retrieve him from South America.  Christopher Walken also has a role in this movie as the bad guy.

Walken runs the mine and has total control of the town where Scott is.  Dwayne Johnson flies down to the South American town and then sets on finding Scott.  He gets lucky when he goes into a bar and finds him there.

Throughout the movie the two fight with each other and get lost in the jungle.  Finding their way out of the jungle and surviving Walken’s onslaught is the primary focus of this great action movie.  It also has a great fight scene in it.

2004

The Day after Tomorrow 2004

This movie poses the question of another ice age.  What would we do and how would we survive. Dennis Quaid gives a stellar performance in this movie as a meteorologist that discovers the phenomenon.

His son ends up being caught out in the storm right before it freezes as he is on a field trip to New York.

A helicopter in England crashes because the fuel lines freeze while it is mid air.  This is a touching story of a father’s struggle to reach his son, and a son’s struggle to stay warm and keep several people alive.

The whole time he is holding on to the belief that his father will reach him and get him and his friends out of there.

2005

Mr. and Mrs. Smith 2005

This is an action packed movie about a married couple.  The couple is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and they are both spies.

Each spy works for a different agency and one agency wants one dead while the other agency wants the other one just as dead.  In pure shoot ‘em up action Pitt and Jolie try to kill each other without much success.

As you watch the movie you begin to wonder if one of them will succeed.  This is also the movie where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie meet and fall in love.

2006

Superman Returns 2006

Although there were many action films in 2006 worthy of being called the best, Superman Returns is my pick because I am a huge superman fan.  Many fans had been in great anticipation of the release of this film for many years, some were disappointed others were gratified.  I was satisfied with this film.

From the opening scene and the dramatic return of Superman to the final scene of the movie, I was enraptured.  Superman returned with flair as he saved a plane full of reporters from their deaths.

However, with Superman’s return is the return of Lex Luthor played brilliantly by Kevin Spacey.  Superman is thought to have died in this movie as well.

2007

Transformers 2007

As a product of the 80’s I often watched the cartoon of the same name and cheered when Optimus Prime beat up on the Decepticons.

This movie tells the story in a fantastic display of special effects.  I especially enjoyed Sam being chased by his car and the wonderful rescue by Megan Fox.  The ultimate battle at the end of the movie in the middle of the city was fantastic.

This movie goes to show how quickly a city can become a battle ground.  I would sure love it if my car was like Bumblebee and could change however it chose to.

2008

Dark Knight 2008

The latest release of the Batman series of films topped box office records and was buzzed for so long.  Honestly, it probably was better than Superman Returns but aside from the box office success the movie shows what happens next in the grow-up of Batman.

He still has a cool car, but he is a little more sinister than contemporary views of him.  Batman also sounds a lot like a grizzly bear and Clint Eastwood mixed into one.  Anyway, this is the movie that lead to the death of Heath Ledger as he played the Joker.

We are also introduced to Two Face in this movie and see what lead to his disfigurement.  All in all this is a great action film based in the comic book genre.

2009

X-Men Origins 2009

X-Men Origins is the next installment of the X-Men saga but it takes place years in the past. It starts in the 19th century when Logan and his brother discover each other’s secret ability. Together the two move through time fighting in several different wars from the civil war to Vietnam.

In Vietnam they meet Col Ricker and a team of other mutants who go after a meteorite in Africa. In Africa Logan doesn’t like what is happening with the team so he leaves and takes a life in Canada as a logger.

Later on Ricker finds Logan and so does his brother and they kill his wife to get him to participate in an experiment by fusing adamantium to his skeleton. After the experiment Ricker and his team decide that Logan is too powerful to keep alive so they then try to kill him.

In the pursuit Logan picks up a couple more mutant friends and storm Ricker’s fortress. The final battle and what happens at the end lead into the first X-Men.
