Top Ten Comedies: 2009

Updated on January 29, 2011

The comedy movie is considered one that will make you laugh a little or have you roaring with laughter. Some movies are very funny while others are only merely funny by tradition standards. As I searched for all comedy movies made between the year 2000 and 2009 I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of comedy movies, so I began to search by individual years. I was able to pick out ten best comedy movies for each year. My favorite types of movies in order are comedies, action, and drama's, then horror.

Some of my favorite books are by Dean Koontz and Stephen King. If you enjoy stories as much as I do then you'll most definitely enjoy this series of top ten lists.

My comedy top ten lists cover the following years:

2000

2001

2002

2003

2004

2005

2006

2007

Number Ten

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past is a new take on the old Christmas Tale.  Conner is a womanizer that dumps girls by conference call.  He was trained by his uncle Wayne that has recently passed away.  Jenny is his lifelong love interest but is too afraid to admit to it.  His brother Paul is on the eve of marrying his fiancée Sandra and Conner is his best man.  At the wedding party Conner professes his undying disbelief in love, hits on the brides mother and prepares to sleep with one of the bridesmaids.  On his way to sleep with one of the bridesmaids, he instead gets visited by his deceased uncle Wayne and told that he will be visited by three ghosts.  The first ghost is that of girlfriends past, and she shows him how good he used to be and reminds him of how much he loves Jenny.  Then she shows him when he became a womanizer and how badly it hurt Jenny.  Next is the ghost of girlfriends present, and she shows him what people are saying about him, and shows him how it hurt the three girls he broke up with via conference call.  Finally, he is visited by the ghost of girlfriends future and shown a wedding in which Jenny marries a guy she met at Paul’s supposed wedding.  Then Conner see’s Paul is not married and lastly he sees his own funeral attended only by Paul.  Was it enough to change Conner and his ways, will he be able to save Paul’s wedding in time?

Number Nine

Year One

Year One is the story of Zed and Oh, two cavemen that don’t really fit in with their tribe.  Zed is a hunter that sucks at hunting and Oh is a gatherer that is not very good at gathering.  One day Zed decides to eat the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, and the two of them end up getting banished from the tribe.  So Zed and Oh make their way out of the forest and down the mountain where they meet Cain and Abel.  They meet Cain and Abel right after the sacrifice of the bible.  Cain then kills Abel and takes Zed and Oh to his village where Zed is allowed to sleep with Adams daughter.  Oh instead has to sleep with Adams other sons, who ends up farting all night.  When Cain makes his escape he brings the two with him and they get sold into slavery.  Mya and Ema are also there.  Zed loves Mya and Oh loves Ema.  Once Zed and Oh escape they meet up with Abraham as he is about to sacrifice his son.  They prevent Abraham from following through with it and get told of the city of Sodom.  In Sodom they find Mya and Ema and work on rescuing them from the king.

Number Eight

He’s Just Not That Into You

This movie starts out with an introduction into what girls are taught as kids, that if a boy does something mean to you it means he likes you.  Obviously this is not true at all.  Gigi is the main character of this movie.  Gigi and Conner are on a date and Conner says he had a nice time at the end of the date.  Gigi believes that Conner will call her but is sorely disappointed.  Conner then calls his friend and part time lover Anna.  Anna isn’t really into him as she is engrossed in a conversation with Ben.  Ben works in a record company and is helping her with her music.  Ben and Neil are good friends and Neil is intrigued by Ben’s conversation with Anna.  Ben assures Neil that it was nothing and returns home to his wife Janine.  Janine is very adamant about Ben not smoking cigarettes.  Neil and Beth live together in an apartment and Neil doesn’t believe in marriage so Beth decides to break up with him after they dated for seven years.  Ben eventually starts an affair with Anna, and then he tells Janine at the Home Depot.  Gigi tries to find Conner again and instead meets his friend Alex, and Alex helps Gigi understand men’s true meanings and intentions.  Anna’s friend Mary runs an ad campaign for Conner, the two end up meeting later on and fall for each other.  This movie is funny in a sad way, as it makes us laugh at the expense of others.  However, there are several times you’ll find yourself laughing at circumstances.  For instance, when Gigi tells Janine that there might be a relationship with Alex they start searching for fantasy wedding destinations.  WTF.

Number Seven

Land of the Lost

Dr. Rick Marshall is a scientist that believes in inter-dimensional time warps.  After numerous attempts at receiving funding and failing his is laughed out of the scientific community.  Later on we find him teaching science to grade school children.  Holly, a former student from Cambridge meets Dr. Marshall and convinces him to build his tachyon transmitter after showing him a fossil of a Zippo imprint.  So Dr. Marshal completes the transmitter and he and holly head out to Arizona.  There they get transported trans-dimensionally into an alternate universe.  This universe has dinosaurs, lizard people, and talking monkeys.  Once the trio arrive they quickly lose their tachyon transmitter and become stuck.  They save a monkey named Chitka and struggle to find their way home.  Along the way they are pursued by a dinosaur that takes great offense to Dr. Marshall’s reference to his walnut sized brain.  Then they get sucked into a game created by the lizard people.  They have been trying to get someone to open the inter-dimensional portal and get lucky with the trio.  This movie is a pretty good comedy riddled with Will Ferrell’s crazy antics.

Number Six

17 Again

When this movie came out I presumed that it would be lame at best.  I was thinking High School Musical because of Zac Efron.  Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to discover a funny movie.  It starts out with Mike playing basketball in High School.  His girlfriend Scarlet tells him that she’s pregnant right before the big game with scouts in the stands.  He at first chooses to play the game but soon after the start of the game he makes the choice for her.  Twenty years later Mike and Scarlet are facing divorce and Mike has just been passed up for promotion at work.  He has given the company 16 years and is the logical choice but his boss chooses a young and beautiful girl that has been there for 2 months instead.  So while reminiscing at the High School he meets his spirit guide and wishes he had it to do all over again.  That night he falls into a river and is turned back into his 17 year old self.  So naturally he starts school again.  He tries to win over Scarlet many times in this movie but is unsuccessful.  He also works on helping out his kids with their High School life.  He connects with both of them and inadvertently attracts the interest of his daughter.  In the end Mike/Mark discovers what is really important in life.

Number Five

Funny People

Funny People is a look inside the life and times of stand up comedians. When superstar comedian George Simons, learns he has a rare blood disease and is dying, he decides to do some stand up. Ira is bumped from doing his routine so George can go on. Ira goes on after George and ends up making fun of him.

George then hires Ira to be his assistant. Throughout Ira’s time as George’s assistant he learns how to be a better comedian and also helps George reconnect with people from his past. Eventually, George and Ira form a friendship that will be tested as George tries to win back the girl that got away.

This movie is an emotional rollercoaster that will have you laughing hysterically one minute and feeling very sad the next. All in all this is a great serious funny movie.

Number Four

I Love You Man

I Love You Man is about Peter Klaven and Zooey, his fiancée.  When Peter asks Zooey to marry him and she says yes, it is soon discovered that Peter doesn’t really have any male friends to be his best man.  So Peter decides to get some friends.  In his attempt to meet guys that are cool, and fun to hang out with he runs into many problems.  One particular problem he encounters happens when he goes on a guy date with a guy his mom set him up with.  They have dinner and the man mistakes Peter for a gay man and ends up kissing him.  Needless to say, it was very awkward for Peter.  So he decides instead to try to hang out with a group of known straight men.  One of the men is Zooey’s friend’s husband that plays poker.  After slamming massive volumes of beer, Peter ends up vomiting and ruins that chance of friendship.  Then he finally meets Sydney Fife.  Sydney is a straight shooter and ends up becoming fast friends with Peter in spite of his retarded statements and awkwardness.  Peter’s new friendship ends up putting a strain on his relationship and he makes a decision to end the friendship with Sydney.  What Peter realizes by the end of the movie though, is that true friendship can endure any trial and that good friends are hard to come by.  I was pleasantly surprised by the funniness of this movie and highly recommend it to anyone that wants to have a good laugh at another’s expense.

Number Three

Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian

In the first Night at the Museum Larry Daley became the night watchman for the museum of natural history in New York.  Now, a couple of years later Larry Daley is a successful inventor of household gadgets, like the glow in the dark flashlight.  When Larry goes back to the museum of natural history he sees that the museum curator is shipping most of the exhibits to the Smithsonian museum in Washington D.C.  They all spend the night together and say good-bye, but not even a day later Larry is called by one of the exhibits that needs help.  So Larry goes to D.C in an attempt to save the exhibits and gets involved in an epic battle against warriors from across time.  The main warrior is an ex pharaoh from Egypt that is trying to open an old portal and release his army into the world.  As the battle begins Larry meets Amelia Earhart and the two begin the adventure of a lifetime.  They also are able to get Abraham Lincoln into the battle and that turns the tide of the battle of the Smithsonian.  Larry soon realizes exactly where he belongs and what he should be doing.  At the end of the movie Larry once more becomes the night watchman at the museum of natural history in New York.

Number Two

The Ugly Truth

The Ugly Truth is about a controlling and neurotic T.V show producer that is unlucky in love.  She has devised a checklist of ten things a mate would have to meet before she would consider dating him.  After an unsuccessful date with one of these men she scares him away by being neurotic at the restaurant.  One huge turn off for him is the list of things to discuss that she has created and gives to him when there was a moment of silence.  After the date she calls a host of a show she inadvertently is watching and he challenges everything she knows about love and dating.  Shortly after their discussion she finds out that the network she produces for has hired him.  She meets a man that meets her criteria and attempts to get a date with him.  The host of the show challenges her with a bet that he can make the doctor fall in love with her if she does exactly what he says.  So she takes the bet and does all of these things and gets the doctor to fall in love with her.  Some hilarious points of the movie involve a pair of vibrating panties and a restaurant, and a spilt drink in the crotch of the doctor at a baseball game.  This movie is absolutely funny in a romantic comedy sort of way.

Number One

The Hangover

In The Hangover Doug and his three friends travel to Las Vegas for Doug’s bachelor party.  The group of four men gathers on the roof of the hotel and takes shots of Yager.  The next scene three of the four wake up on the floor of their suite.  One guy is missing his tooth, and one is missing his pants, and all three are missing Doug.  There is also a tiger in the bathroom and a baby hiding away in the closet.  Now the three men and the one baby must figure out what happened to them last night and they must find their missing friend Doug in time for his wedding.  In the midst of their search they get delivered a cop car by the valet, and get attacked by a group of thugs.  One friend discovers that he married a hot stripper, which is who the baby belongs to.  After being arrested and tasered by the cops they get their car back.  After hearing knocking from the trunk they figure it must be Doug.  Wrong, they instead get attacked by a Chinese man who apparently has Doug.  Doug’s soon to be brother-in-law Allen gets knocked out by Mike Tyson when they return to their suite at the hotel.  Once they find Doug they must rush to his wedding and get their tux’s delivered to them at seventy miles an hour on the freeway.  This movie is probably the best I have seen since Super Troopers.
