Top Ten Dean Koontz Books
86Of all the writers and published writers in the wide world one is my absolute favorite. That one is none other than Dean R. Koontz. Mr. Koontz has been writing novels, short stories, and the like since 1968 when his first book “Star Quest” was published. He is also known to have written several novels and stories under an array of pseudonyms early on in his writing career. Dean Koontz’s breakthrough novel came in 1980 with the release of “Watchers.” He is widely known for writing suspense type novels with elements of horror, mystery, and science fiction. Of all the roughly 55 novels that Dean Koontz has written, this is my top ten list. Compiling this list was actually harder than I originally imagined and I sometimes found myself torn between books for a spot on the list.
The Books
Ten
The Darkest Evening of The Year
The Darkest Evening of the Year is the first book in my top ten Dean Koontz books. It has a copyright date of 2007 and was released by Bantam books in 2007. The Darkest Evening of the Year follows Amy on an adventure of discovery and wonder. She is a woman who rescues dogs from abuse and other such things. On the first couple of pages she saves a dog named Nickie from an abusive husband and father with her friend Brian. Little does she know at the time of the rescue but Nickie is a very special dog from Amy’s own past. Brian also has issues in this novel and is the target of the antagonist. The story wraps its arms around the characters and pulls them all together in standard Koontz fashion. This novel is believed to have been written in memory of Dean Koontz’s dog Trixie who passed in 2007. You can feel in the book the connection Koontz had with his dog and the emotion in which he wrote this novel. Even though this novel comes in at number ten on my list it is a great read for anyone to enjoy.
Nine
Shadowfires
Shadowfires is another of Dean Koontz’s older novels which was copyrighted in 1987 and released by Berkley Books in 1993. The main character or heroine of this novel is Rachael, a wonderful person who is tormented by a terrifying man. The man is Eric, her husband. Rachael requests a clean and hassle free divorce from Eric and she unfortunately doesn’t receive it. Instead Eric becomes infuriated and in the heat of the moment winds up getting struck down by a traffic accident. Rachael is both shocked and relieved…for awhile. Then Eric’s body disappears from the morgue and Rachael ends up in a battle of wits against a presumed dead man. All in all this is a fantastic novel that really gets your heart racing. The book is 509 pages of unrelenting suspense that will keep you guessing about what will happen next.
Eight
One Door Away From Heaven
One Door Away from Heaven has a copyright of 2001 and was released by Bantam books in 2001 in hardcover. One Door Away from Heaven is a tale of mystery and intrigue as the author takes us along with a woman on a mission to save a disabled little girl from certain death. Michelina Bellsong is the heroine in this story. The little girl Leilani is a nine year old girl who is disabled but indomitable. Her step father believes that aliens will come and cure her of her disability by the time she turns ten or take her to a better life. Leilani’s brother has already gone on the journey to a better life. Leilani is nine years old and has gone missing so Michelina takes off across the country in search for her. This novel is 681 pages of a breakneck speed race across the country as our heroine attempts to save the life of a little girl. Thrown into the mix is a little boy who helps along the story.
Seven
The Husband
The Husband has a copyright of 2006 and was released in 2006 by Bantam books. This novel also has a fast paced story line with multiple twists and turns. It opens up when a gardener of modest means receives a phone call on his cell phone. Someone has abducted his wife and is requesting two million dollars within sixty hours. Mitch doesn’t have that kind of money but he loves his wife so much that he would do anything to get her back safely. Mitch seeks assistance from his brother who is wealthy and can afford to help him out. This story has you guessing one thing, then you get a twist and you start to think something else. Finally towards the end of this 415 page novel comes the final turn and leaves you thirsting to finish out the novel to discover what happens in the end.
Six
False Memory
False Memory has a copyright of 1999 and was released in 1999 by Bantam books. This novel brings to light a terrible condition called autophobia. The main character takes her friend to a psychiatrist who treats her on a weekly basis, suddenly and without any warning she becomes afflicted with autophobia. This is really weird because she is a normal person that one would not believe she could become afflicted. Then her husband takes her to the same psychiatrist she was taking her friend to. There is a psychotic killer on the loose in this novel and the book once more takes you on a fascinating journey of unrelenting speed and you’ll find yourself yearning for answers. All 751 pages seem to turn themselves as you race to discover what is going on. Dean Koontz is well known for throwing in last minute twists and turns so this novel will keep you guessing until the very end.
Five
Life Expectancy
Life Expectancy has a copyright of 2004 and was released in 2004 by Bantam books. Life Expectancy follows Jimmy Tock through his life. A strange prediction by his grandfather on his death bed sets the tone for this novel. Jimmy Tock lives his life without fear or incident for the first twenty years of his life. But true to his grandfathers prediction when Jimmy is in his twentieth year he experiences a tragedy while at a library. He escapes with his life and falls in love with a woman on the same day. Throughout the next ten years just like the prediction his grandfather made he experiences three more tragedies. The final incident at the end of this 476 page book will have you wondering if he’ll survive or not. In this novel you’ll find a worthy read that will have you intrigued with the characters and you will also be able to associate with them.
Four
Velocity
Velocity has a copyright of 2005 and was released in 2005 by Bantam books. Not very often in our lives will we come across a novel so aptly named as Velocity. There are novels that can enrapture you by page one hundred and there are those that can do so by page ten. Velocity is a novel that gets you by page ten. As I read through this book I thought about what I would do. I am sure that you too will do the same thing. A normal guy is left a note by someone who gives him a sick choice. “Take this note to police…I’ll kill an elderly lady active in charity if you don’t I’ll instead kill a lovely blond schoolteacher.” What choice would you make? Could you make that kind of choice?” Billy could not make the choice and did nothing so the insane killer killed the teacher. Billy soon realizes that he is a part of a sick game of choice. He also figures out that not making a choice and not playing the game is still a choice of deadly consequences. All in all, this entire book will have you burning down the pages to get to the next one. Velocity is 458 pages of pure adrenaline pumping action and suspense, and a great read.
Three
Lightning
One of Dean Koontz’s older books, Lightning is third on my list. Lightning was copyrighted in 1988 and published under the Berkley Novel banner and released in 1989. Lightning is a gripping tale of romance and science fiction. The main character Laura is an object of fascination for the other main character. Laura believes that this man who comes in at random stages of her life is her guardian angel—but is he? This man continues to appear to her at different stages of her life while remaining the same age. He comes in to save her from tragedy and inadvertently falls in love with her. Is he the guardian angel she believes him to be? Or is he a stranger from a distant land? This book is 355 pages of pure reading bliss; I read this book like a ravenous beast thirsting for absolution.
Two
The Good Guy
The Good Guy has a copyright date of 2007 and was released in 2007 by Bantam books. In this 447 page novel you will learn that ordinary men are most often not ordinary in the least. A standard case of mistaken identity happens in this novel when the main character Timothy Carrier is approached by a man. The bar in which Timothy frequents after work sets the stage for the beginning of this wonderful novel. The man is just a messenger sent to employ the services of a man mistaken for Tim. Tim takes the envelope with the cash and photo and figures out that this woman has been marked for death. He locates the woman and takes her away from some would be assassins. The antagonist is a great creation of an OCD man who relentlessly hounds and hunts Tim and the woman he swore to protect. This story will have you reading well into the night and also hooks you at page ten. I ranked this book at number two because of the depth of character and surprise ending at the end of the book.
One
From The Corner Of His Eye
From the Corner of His Eye has a copyright of 2000 and was released by Bantam books in 2000. This book was chosen to hold the number one spot on my list because it is a novel of love and all the interconnectedness of the world. The story follows Bartholomew Lampion throughout his life. Bartholomew was born on a night of terror that will haunt his family for the rest of their lives. When Bartholomew reaches the age of three he is blinded when doctors remove his eyes. He has a fast spreading cancer in his eyes so the doctors just remove them to save his life. Bartholomew and his mother work together to live their life while dealing with Bartholomew’s blindness, but he proves to be a prodigy. When Bartholomew turns thirteen he somehow regains his sight. I know impossible right? Wrong. Along the journey of Bartholomew and his mother’s life they meet a girl who was born as a result of a rape and they come across a man bent on killing Bartholomew for unknown reasons. This book will take you on a grand journey of discovery. It will teach you how life is connected and how each thing we do affects those people we don’t know. The book is 729 pages and with all Dean Koontz’s books very quick to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a story that takes you on a fantastic voyage.
Author's Note:
In conclusion of this list, I hope that you see how wonderful a novelist Dean Koontz is. His novels are ones that can be read within a couple of nights. His characters jump right off the pages and are ones that you can relate to in some way or another. His prose is always mesmerizing and reading his books is like watching a movie. I highly encourage anyone who loves to read and who loves to be swept away with a book to read Dean Koontz. As I have read all of his books except the newest ones, I can say without a doubt that they are all great stories.

What a pleasure to know that you are as big of a fan of Dean Koontz as I am! I've been reading his books for about 20 years now, since someone left a copy of "Hideaway" at our house, and I picked it up and then couldn't put it down, lol..
For the most part--I'm in agreement with your list, but my first three would be Watchers, Ticktock, and Lightening--they are my absolute most favorites of his! But, honestly, it's so hard to pick what my top ten would be, because I love all of them, lol...
Thank you for reminding me of Shadowfires--I have misplaced my copy, and had forgotten about it until now.
Have you read Relentless yet? I think it's a really great read--one of his better ones lately!
Okay--enough for now...this is your hub, not mine, haha...but thanks so much for this great hub--I really enjoyed it, as you can probably tell...:)
Tammy - LOL!! Trying to take over another hub! Good girl! I, too, am a huge Dean Koontz fan, but have no fave book to discuss. Great hub Wesley
I've read some Koontz's books years ago. My first one has been "Phantoms!". I've read it during my classes of latin at the high school. I found it well written. A good horror book, much more interesting than a class about latin metric! I enjoyed also Fear Nothing. I'll try to read some others from your nice list! Thank you!
Thanks Wes, I used to read his books all the time. I think I will look him up again. Thanks so much for reminding me.
He is a good novelist. His characters are often warped to believable standards. Good Hub.
I love this author too. Great books too! :)
Sadly I cannot say I have ever read his work. I have heard of him though. Thank you for arousing my interest in his books.
Wesley I thought you did a terrific job of making me want to read this author. I've seen his books around, but can't honestly remember reading any. Another author for me to discover! Thank you.
great review, not read any
i picked up a koontz at a jumble sale my nan dragged me to and immediately fell in love! i agree with your number one. The child-like yet adult interactions between barty and angel are adorable and i especially love miss velveeta cheese, throwing a pig and i almost cheered when tom vanadium survived!! thanks for the list will deffo help in my next purchase!!
WHAT??? I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH THIS LIST. I'm sorry but "Life Expectancy"? That book was one of his worst. Where is Watchers? Where is Intensity? Where is Sole Survivor?
Gotta love Dean Koontz! I have yet to read any of these books though they sit on my shelf...no wait take that back I did read Shadowfire and I agree...GREAT BOOK! :-) glad to know a fellow Koontz fan! Keep me posted on what books of his are a good read. :-)
I didn't post to be patronized. I'm serious. Why aren't those books on there? Have you read them?
lol, i wrote one sentence in all caps do indicate my shock at how ridiculous your list is...and lol @ being blessed that you didn't delete my comment...go ahead and delete it...i dont give a shit, you dont even know good books when you read them...buh bye
Thanks, Wes. I just finished reading Odd Thomas and Odd Hours...one of Koontz's most unique characters...Odd sees dead people but they can't talk. I'm a little surprised Odd didn't make the top ten, but what can one do? I'll be reading more of Koontz as his prose is like watching a movie...good for any writer to learn from.
Thanks,
Rand
One of the books you forget to mention in your list is the infamous: twilight eyes.
I thought I had read most all he had written but looking at your list, I've got some catching up. Your #1 is a great story. He has two continuing characters, Odd Thomas, who is very likeable, and I can't remember the title of the guy who cannot go out during the day. Koontz is prolific and even with shelves of his books I am sure there are many to read. Your list will help.
thanks, i have read all of them but, i read so much i find that sometimes the names or titles escapes me but I can talk all about the subject. Thanks again.
Wiener dogs in outer space
Great list! I've only read The Husband and Velocity and I'm reading Shadowfires right now. I also thought Mr. Murder was great too. I will be sure to look for the rest of them.
Just finished Intensity. Up until now, From the Corner of his Eye had been my favorite. Intensity is an absolute in any Koontz fan collection. False Memory, and Sole Survivor also rank high on my list. The question now, is which one to read next.
In any case, I *highly* recommend Intensity to any reader looking for an excellent thrill!
Lightning was the book that hooked me on Koontz and i have to say is one of the better books i have ever read.Funny you didn;t mention Watchers? most who liked Lightning also enjoyed Watchers.
Thanks for the list..
The Taking should of made this list! :) AND Shadowfires deserved to be in the top 3... it's genius how Koontz describes the day by day moments of the resurrected sob and his decent from humanity...
Ah, Fear Nothing and Sieze The Night! I was just reading your list & trying to recall the name of the main character who has the disease and has to stay out of the sun. I thought those books had a neat sense of humor! You have great taste in authors!
Just finished Strangers and found it to be another great book by Koontz.I have allot of catching up to do regarding his work and have also finished all of the Odd Thomas series as well...Koontz has me lock stock and barrel.
Now i have to decide whats next...and as ussual i start at your list which is bookmarked in my favorites section...thanks again for this great list and starting point to Koontz's work.
Parker Shultz
p.s not related to the crazy Schultz that had issues with your list...hah ha
Thank you for this list. I received a Nook for Christmas and decided to read Koontz, as he was a favorite of mine wayyyy back when I read as a teen. I just finished Lightening (LOVED it!) and was eager for some other suggestions. Seeing that Lighting is on your list and your brief descriptions of each book, I am sure I will love your top ten as well. Thanks for pulling together this list. I really appreciate it!
I found this article because I am going on a cruise soon and have 5 newish DK books to read and was wondering which 2 to bring with me. I have been a huge DK fan since 1993 when my dad loaned me his copy of Cold Fire...totally fell in love with DK with that one book and since then I have bought and read all of his books, with the exception of the newer ones and have read my faves (Lightning, Strangers, Watchers & From the Corner of his Eye) many, many times. Just wanted to say thanks for helping me narrow down my choices :)
Wes I think you're my new best friend. Along with Stephen King, Dean Koontz is one of my all time favorite authors. I share many of my 2427 books with friends but I will never share my S.K or D.K. since I mistakenly lent a rare S.K 1st edition to a friend and never got it back!! I am a junkie when it comes to these two authors, if I don't have a book to read, I go through withdrawals. I love your hub. Thank you.
It is a true pleasure to read such a gracious comment. I am thrilled that there are people out in this world of instant gratification that still enjoy the thrill of a good book. Thank you for reading.
I have read all of Koontz's books except 2 (Icebound, too slow and different style, and Strange Highways, just haven't finished it). He is the most adept living writer in the English language. Don't forget about the two best novels ever written (in this genre :))Midnight and Watchers. I wish all writer's read Dean Koontz, quality and content would be better everywhere.
I have to agree with Danielle, as a top 10 of Dean Koontz novels, this is pretty poor. Most of his newer books don't come close to his classic 80's/90's work. Where's Strangers, Midnight, Twilight eyes,Intensity or The Bad Place? And Watchers s the best of all. In my experience most Koontz fans would agree those are some of his very best.
I appreciate these are your choices, and i still love all the books on the list, i'm just surprised an avid Koontz fan did not include a few more classics. But everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, and i always respect somone wise enough to their spend time reading Koontz's truly amazing books!
Your top 10 is pretty similar to mine actually. From the Corner of his Eye to me is by far the most amazing book he has ever written. I understand some people will fight to the death and say Watchers is the best, yeah it's great and all, but it doesn't encompass the depth of humanity what with compassion, love, hate, empathy, desire, obsession, trust, faith, etc. etc. etc. You can go on and on about it lol. Anyways it's my favorite book of all time.
1. From the Corner of His Eye - Dean Koontz
2. Atlas Shrugged - Ann Rand
3. Gangster - Lorenzo Carcaterra
Watchers doesn't encompass human compassion, love, hate, empathy, desire, obsession, trust or faith? Have you actually read it?! It deals with all of those issues and more. I could start giving examples, but i'd be here all day.
I am way better than Dean Koontz.
I am better than both Koontz and King.
Dear writer,
your list is really very informative for any reader . You have done very good job . You have told to new reader which books are important of life and this mean you are guiding the reader in right direction. There are lots people but we love very few people .Like this ,there are so many books but some are really for readings. But your all collection is lovely.
Thanks.
what about the Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series? those are the best in my opinion
Thank you for reading and I agree with the Frankenstein books. They are some excellent books. Keep reading Koontz and check out my new store.
I have loved dean's books since I read The Bad Place, one of my favorites, also love The Taking, Twilight eyes Lightning Phantoms, Frankenstien series. just a great writer.
Hey Wesley! I've been an avid Koontz reader for about 6 or 7 years now, started with my friend recommending Odd Thomas. I couldn't believe how quickly I got hooked on reading one particular author. I haven't even considered another since I started reading Koontz. I love your list, and I also love Intensity as some other people said, but just because it isn't on your list doesn't mean it isn't a fabulous read. Irritating that people think YOUR list should include anything but YOUR favorites. I have read all but I believe 2 that are on your list including Watchers and One Door away from heaven. I also need to check out Lightning because it sounds familiar but I can't exactly remember if I've read it. Also, the "One door away from heaven" sounds an awful lot like "The door to december" have u read this one?
I'm currently reading Your Heart Belongs to Me and I CANNOT PUT IT DOWN!!! Started it a couple days ago and will probably finish it tonight.
Overall great list!
I've tried many koontz novels and can't seem to get into any of them. The one book I actually enjoyed was Velocity. That was the only book on the list I had read. Now I have a list of a few that may work for me. Thanks!
i stated dean koontz with the frankenstein series, and i've started reading more of his. but i have to say watchers is in my top 5 all time books if not number 1. its probably tied with Prey by Michael Crichton. Hes really good too
Just finished Life Expectancy... and it was fantastic... enjoyed his writing style and suspense! My first experience reading his work will not be the last.. can't wait to read all of the above!! Ann
Great List.
Every time I read a Dean Koontz book I think "man that would make a great movie".
Just finished by the light of the moon. Very funny and entertaining.
Really can't believe I found your top choice at my place of work!! And a coworker expressed her fine regard for this work of art too!! She wants to read it again... not till I do!! I found 2 of his works and and now reading Winter Moon.. Soo I want to finish what I start EH?? Thanks for the insight look forward to chatting soon Ann
great list!!! loved from the corner of his eye. the one book you left off the list was the face.
Great hub; enjoyed reading it. I'm an on again/off again Koontz fan, but, I agree with your inclusion of Lightning. That was the first Koontz book I ever read & I loved it. I listened to "From The Corner of His Eye" via audiobook and liked it right up until the end. I was just so disappointed in the ending. My other favorites of his has always been Strangers, and, among his latest work, Odd Thomas and The Taking.
Uh,has anyone ever heard of The Bad Place?Number 1 and always will be!
If you love Koontz as much as you think then you must check out Richard Laymon!I would suggest Body Rides or Island to start.Laymon takes you where Koonts sometimes wishes he could go but realizes he would be playing with fire if he should go there and he knows this...
Your welcome.I am almost finished with Laymons Savage for the second time and since reading your hub and not agreeing with your top ten I am determined to read a Koontz novel.A book that I remember leaving a large impression on me is titled By The Light Of The Moon. Why its not in your top 10 is crazy!Well,Twilight Eyes,Whispers,Watchers,Midnight and The Bad Place are not there either so who's to say whats going through your mind?If possible could you comment on By The Light Of The Moon before I begin reading it?There is something about that book..I shall find out shortly why..
the first dean koontz book i read was in fact Fear Nothing. i'd never heard of the author. the title caught my attention. when i began to read about the character's skin condition, and his adventures, i found myself reading far too much late into the night even tho i had to get up early - i couldn't close the book. i was sad when i was done. i've read others since then, but most recently i read the husband. it too was a good read, but my favorite dean koontz book continues to be Fear Nothing. well done.
I love Dean Koontz. The first book I read from him was the Lightning, and I loved the fact that it had a plot, I'm going to have to check out some of these books. Thanks for the list.
Poor list... here's a better one...
1. Strangers
2. Watchers
3. Midnight
4. Fear Nothing
5. Twilight Eyes
6. Intensity
7. False Memory
8. Dragon Tears
9. The Bad Place
10. Whispers
WATCHERS is Dean Koontz!
His love of dogs shines in so many of his books but Einstein is the doggie hero I will never forget! I haven't read many of his newer books but the Frankenstein series broughtme back to the fold. Midnight and Strangers are must reads too. Thanks for your list now I will start reading some of his more current books.
Loved Dean Koontz books for years but then started reading James Rollins, Childs & Lincoln, J.D.Robb, Janet Evanovich, etc., etc. Need to catch up again with Koontz. Loved: Watchers, Strangers, Whispers, Lightning, Shattered, Intensity, etc., etc....only book I liked of King's was "It," and Patterson's are too shallow. :)
Wesley where are you?You have a fan club of your own you know and we expect your insight into Koontz...Doth thine deserteth us?
Cool Site, i was only really into the Odd books, from Mr Koontz. Sometimes, i fear trying to read an authors other collection, but upon reading your reviews, i will give his other books a go.
But i am totally amazed at how much Mr Koontz has written, in one life time! all i can say is WOW.
I love the horror genre and started out with Steven King. I honestly didnt like many of his works and just last week my mom came home with the book Intensity. My brother used to read Dean koontz all the time so I picked it up and suprisingly finished it in one night. I was so thrilled with his writing style that I went to the library and got another two books, the face of fear and whispers. I already finished the first one and am starting the second one right now. thanks for this list of other books I was having a hard time choosing the next one :)
hey dean koontz fans any idea when he will be releasing a new book? i think he's amazing but i have read everything so far really looking forward to something new
My forth and soon to finish is Lightning... seek the pure of heart... what will I choose next sweetie?? Ann
dean koonz is a wonderfull writter that never fails to enthrall me whenever i read is novels.i just keep wondering where this great writter is getting is fascinating plots.
Dean Koonz has been one of my favorite authors for many years, but I've lost touch with his books lately. Thanks for the reminder about him - I have some catching up to do!
I agree with your #1 choice. From the Corner of His Eye was one of the last I read, and I loved it.
Is the funhouse good I just started it and I was wondering because this is my first Dean Koontz book.
I just loved the book intensity. This stuff happens in the real world. And yes, his love of animals, i love that.
I started reading By THE light OF The Moon yesterday and can hardly put it down.My Kindle that is.What an idea for a story.Being injected against your will with a magic serum. Is that the right word? Please comment on this novel and I would appreciate knowing why it didnt make your list. Its better than One Door Away From Heaven.

Thanks Wes Gonna have to check this guy out.
