War: A Poem

War: A Poem
As I sit all weak and weeping, from my eyes they’re gently seeping
memories wake me from dreams of war
As they ease down my sodden cheek, I don’t dare speak
For I am far too weak, weak from dreams deep in gore
Twas only a dream that made me weak from a past war
Only that and nothing more.
Again I am in Iraq, yet safe at home on my back
back again to this game of which there is no score
In our Humvees we go down the road, supplies is our load
as we drive bombs explode—sounds we’ve all heard before
We’ve heard them once and sure to hear them evermore
Just this and nothing more
There shall never be any retreating; we do without a single bleating
I thought I saw it all but what happened next made my heart sore
Upon this night we got a case, a child was playing in her favorite place
When suddenly the bullets tore through her face, a sight I’m deeply troubled for
During the night, through the dark, hell was brought ashore
All of that and nothing more.
Oh this night all too scary all I wish is to be home and merry
Move us out of this God forsaken war
Battles rage and soon encroaches destiny also approaches
Leaders holler demeaning reproaches, reproaches from behind the door
The ice cold steel fingers of fear scare me through to my core
Simply that and nothing more
Sitting here on the window seat, staring down at my bare feet
Remembering the heavy burden of this finished chore
The things I remember best is the evil done in a terrorist nest
But surely we’ve all passed the test and never have to return to war
But if we do I surely hope this time it’s a bore
Return I vow, “Nevermore.”
